bias

/ˈbaɪ.əs/ Beginner Updated

In K-pop slang, your bias is your favorite member of a group. If you love a whole band but one person stands out most, that person is your bias. Fans often say “my bias is…” as a quick way to introduce themselves.

What does bias mean?

In normal English, bias means unfair prejudice. In fandom it has been flipped into something affectionate: an openly admitted favorite. Most fans have one bias per group, and many keep a “bias list” across all the groups they follow.

Two common variations:

  • Ult bias (ultimate bias): your number one favorite out of every idol you like, across all groups.
  • Bias group: your favorite group overall.

How to use it

  • “Who’s your bias in Stray Kids?”
  • “My bias just posted a selca and I can’t function.”
  • “I came for the music and left with a new bias.”
  • “She’s my ult bias, no contest.”

The word is so standard in K-pop that it has spread to other fandoms, too. People talk about their bias on a reality show, in a sports team or among the cast of a series.
