aegyo

/ɛ.ɡjo/ Intermediate Updated

Aegyo is a Korean word for deliberately cute behavior: a baby voice, pouting, wide eyes, little hand gestures and playful whining. In K-pop, idols are often asked to “do aegyo” for fans, and it is a staple of variety shows and fan meetings.

What does aegyo mean?

Aegyo (애교) describes acting adorable on purpose to charm someone. It is not just a K-pop thing; in Korea, people use aegyo with partners, friends and family, especially when asking for a favor or smoothing over an argument. In fandom, though, it usually refers to idols putting on an extra-cute performance, whether they enjoy it or are visibly embarrassed.

What aegyo looks like

  • Speaking in a high, childlike voice or adding cute sounds to words.
  • Pouting, puffing cheeks or blinking quickly.
  • Finger hearts, peace signs framed around the face, little fists under the chin.
  • Playful whining, often to get something from someone.

How to use it

  • “The MC made him do aegyo and he turned bright red.”
  • “Her aegyo is so natural, she doesn’t even try.”
  • “He’s the group’s aegyo king.”
  • “Stop using aegyo to get out of doing the dishes.”

Love it or cringe

Fans are split. Some adore aegyo moments; others find them awkward, especially when idols are clearly pressured into them. Plenty of idols openly say they hate doing it, which has become its own running joke.
