fan service

/fæn ˈsɜːr.vɪs/ Intermediate Updated

Fan service is anything done mainly to please fans. In K-pop it means idols interacting with fans: waving, finger hearts, playful moments on stage. In anime and manga, it usually means scenes added purely to excite the audience, often suggestive ones.

What does fan service mean?

The phrase has two main homes, and the meaning shifts between them:

  • K-pop and celebrities: Idols reaching out to fans during concerts, fan meetings or livestreams. Waving to the crowd, posing for fan cameras, reading signs, doing aegyo on request, or playing up their friendships with other members. This kind of fan service is mostly sweet and expected.
  • Anime, manga and games: Scenes that don’t move the story forward but are there to please viewers. Often this means revealing outfits or suggestive camera angles, but it can also be an unnecessary cameo or a crowd-pleasing callback.

More broadly, people use “fan service” for any moment in a film, sequel or reboot that exists mainly to make long-time fans cheer.

How to use it

  • “He spent the whole encore running to the edge of the stage. Amazing fan service.”
  • “That beach episode was pure fan service.”
  • “The sequel is basically two hours of fan service, and I loved it.”
  • “They know exactly what fans want. Every live stream is fan service.”

Is fan service good or bad?

In K-pop, fans generally see it as a positive, a sign that idols care. In anime and film, the word is often a criticism, suggesting something was added for cheap reactions instead of good storytelling. Tone usually tells you which.
