face reveal

/feɪs rɪˈviːl/ Beginner Updated

A face reveal is when someone who has been anonymous online shows their face for the first time. It is a big moment for streamers, YouTubers and artists who built an audience without ever appearing on camera.

What does face reveal mean?

Plenty of creators work faceless. They use an avatar, a mask, a cartoon, or just their voice over gameplay. When one of them finally shows their real face, that video or stream is the face reveal. Creators often tie it to a milestone, like hitting a follower count.

One of the best-known examples is the Minecraft YouTuber Dream, who posted a video called “Hi, I’m Dream” on October 2, 2022. It passed 18 million views in about 13 hours.

How to use it

  • “He hit a million subscribers and finally did a face reveal.”
  • “Face reveal at 10k followers, as promised.”
  • “My cat’s face reveal: yes, he always looks this annoyed.”
  • “Half the chat said the face reveal ruined the mystery.”

People also use it jokingly for pets, or when someone who rarely posts selfies finally posts one.

Why some creators never do one

Staying faceless protects privacy and safety, keeps a persona separate from real life, and avoids the pressure of being judged on looks. Many VTubers treat their avatar as the whole point and never plan a reveal at all.
