clip it
“Clip it” (or “clip that”) is what streamers and their chat say when something funny, impressive or embarrassing just happened and it needs to be saved as a short video. The clip can then be shared, posted or used against you forever.
What it means
On Twitch and other streaming sites, anyone watching can grab a short clip of the last few seconds of a live stream. When a streamer pulls off a ridiculous play or says something they shouldn’t, the chat fills with “CLIP IT.” Streamers say it themselves when they know a moment is gold.
It has spread off-stream as well. Friends say “someone clip that” in real life when a person says something dumb, even though nobody is recording.
Examples
- “1v4 clutch with no armor. CLIP IT.”
- “Did he just call his teacher ‘mom’? Clip that.”
- “Nobody clip that. Please. I’m begging.”
Where it came from
Nobody is credited with the phrase; it grew up with the feature. Twitch launched Clips in May 2016. At the time, a clip captured about 25 seconds before you pressed the button and 5 seconds after, and it showed the name of the viewer who made it.
Clips have since become a business. They get reposted to TikTok and YouTube Shorts, and some streamers pay “clippers” to cut and spread them. In April 2026 Tubefilter reported that Kick streamer N3on had paid more than $1.4 million over five weeks to 303 clippers.
