laggy

/ˈlæɡ.i/ Beginner Updated

Laggy means slow to respond because of a delay, usually in an online game, a video call or an app. When something is laggy, what you see on screen falls behind what is actually happening.

What does laggy mean?

“Lag” is the delay between an action and the result. In an online game, you press a button and your character reacts a beat late, or other players jump around the map. On a video call, someone freezes mid-sentence and then catches up in fast forward. Any of that is laggy.

People also use it loosely for any device that feels slow or stuttery, and sometimes for themselves when their brain is running behind.

How to use it

  • “The servers are so laggy tonight I keep teleporting backwards.”
  • “Your video is laggy. You froze mid-sentence.”
  • “My phone gets laggy every time I open the camera.”
  • “Sorry, my brain’s a bit laggy before coffee.”

Laggy vs. low FPS

Gamers sometimes separate the two. Lag usually means network delay: a slow or unstable connection, high ping, or an overloaded server. Low FPS (frames per second) means your device can’t draw the game smoothly, so it looks choppy even offline. In everyday talk, people call both “laggy.”

What makes things laggy?

Common culprits are weak Wi-Fi, a distant or busy server, too many apps running at once, or an older device. Plugging in a cable instead of using Wi-Fi often fixes online lag.
