rage quit

/reɪdʒ kwɪt/ Beginner Updated

To rage quit is to quit a game, or anything else, suddenly and angrily because you are frustrated. In online games it usually means leaving mid-match, sometimes leaving your teammates stranded.

What does rage quit mean?

A rage quit is the opposite of losing gracefully. Instead of finishing the match and typing GG, the player slams the exit button, closes the game, or in legendary cases, throws the controller. Streamers’ rage quits are a whole genre of clip on YouTube and Twitch.

The phrase also works outside games: rage quitting a puzzle, a group chat, an online form that keeps erasing your answers, or even a job.

How to use it

  • “He lost one round and rage quit. We had to play 4 versus 5.”
  • “I rage quit that level after the twentieth try.”
  • “She rage quit the group chat after the third argument.”
  • “If this form logs me out one more time, I’m rage quitting.”

Why it annoys people

In team games, a rage quit isn’t just a tantrum, it punishes everyone left behind. That is why many competitive games give penalties, such as temporary bans or lost ranking points, to players who leave matches early.
