poggers

/ˈpɒɡərz/ Intermediate Updated

Poggers, often shortened to pog, is a hype word meaning “awesome” or “that’s amazing.” It comes from Twitch chat emotes used when something exciting happens on stream.

What poggers and pog mean

When a streamer pulls off an incredible play, chat floods with “POG,” “Poggers” or “PogChamp.” It works like shouting “let’s go!” Outside Twitch, people use “pog” for good news of any kind, and “unpog” or “not pog” for disappointment.

Examples

  • “He hit that shot from across the map, POG.”
  • “Free pizza at work today? Poggers.”
  • “New season drops tomorrow, pog.”
  • “They cancelled the event. Not pog.”

PogChamp, Poggers and the faces behind them

There are two related emotes. The original PogChamp showed the surprised face of fighting-game streamer Ryan “Gootecks” Gutierrez, taken from a 2010 video, and became a global Twitch emote in 2012. According to Wikipedia, the name came from a 2011 video called “Pogs Championship.”

Poggers is a separate emote showing Pepe the Frog looking amazed, submitted to the BetterTTV extension in 2017, according to Know Your Meme. In January 2021, Twitch removed the original PogChamp after Gutierrez’s comments about the attack on the U.S. Capitol, rotated in new faces daily, and later let users vote on a replacement.
