sheesh

/ʃiːʃ/ Intermediate Updated

Sheesh is an exclamation of amazement, admiration or disbelief, like “wow” or “dang.” Today it’s most often a hype word, used when something or someone looks impressive.

What does sheesh mean?

Sheesh can go two ways. Traditionally it expressed mild exasperation, a bit like “geez”: “Sheesh, it’s cold in here.” In current slang it’s usually positive and drawn out for effect, “sheeeesh,” to react to a great outfit, a big play in a game, or someone glowing up.

How to use sheesh

  • “Sheeeesh, that fit is clean.”
  • “He hit that shot from half court. Sheesh!”
  • “Sheesh, you didn’t have to go that hard.”
  • “Sheesh, the line for coffee is out the door.” (exasperated)

The “sheesh” face

In 2021, a TikTok trend had people say a long, slow “sheeeesh” while making an exaggerated, wincing face, usually to react to something impressive. That trend is why the hype meaning took over for younger speakers.

Where sheesh comes from

Sheesh isn’t new. Merriam-Webster dates it to 1955 and suggests it may be an alteration of “jeez.” According to Know Your Meme, the TikTok “sheesh” sound trend began on February 14, 2021, and peaked in late March 2021.
