Slay queen means two very different things depending on where you are. In the US, “Slay, queen!” is a cheer for someone who looks or performs amazingly. In Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana, a slay queen is a put-down for a young woman who shows off a glamorous lifestyle she can’t really afford.

The American meaning: praise

Here it’s pure hype, in the same family as “Yas, queen!” A friend posts a stunning photo or nails a presentation, and you comment “slay, queen.” It comes from slay, which grew out of Black, Latino and queer ballroom culture and spread through Paris Is Burning, RuPaul’s Drag Race and Beyoncé.

The West African and Kenyan meaning: an insult

In Nigeria, the news site Legit.ng describes slay queens as young women who post a lavish, party-heavy lifestyle on social media, often faked with borrowed cars and outfits, and who look to wealthy men to pay for it. Dictionary.com records a similar Kenyan use for a vain woman chasing money. The male version is sometimes called a slay king.

Ghana’s Graphic Online notes that many women find the label offensive and degrading, and some have started reclaiming it to mean a confident woman who simply likes to look good.

Where it came from

No source pins down when “slay queen” first appeared as a fixed phrase. The American cheer is simply “slay” plus “queen,” two words with long histories in queer and Black slang. The African meaning developed separately on social media and in everyday speech.

Which meaning to expect

If the speaker is American and the tone is excited, it’s a compliment. If the speaker is Nigerian, Ghanaian or Kenyan and the subject is someone’s lifestyle, it’s probably not. When in doubt, check the context before you use it.
