chopped

/CHOPT/ Beginner Updated

Chopped means ugly or unattractive. It’s used about people, outfits, haircuts, cars and pretty much anything else, and it took off as a Gen Z and Gen Alpha insult in the mid-2020s.

What it means

Calling someone chopped is a put-down about their looks. Dictionary.com also lists a broader sense: uncool or undesirable. A lot of the time people say it about themselves, as a joke: “I woke up chopped today.”

Because it’s an insult about appearance, it can sting more than the casual tone suggests. Saying it about a celebrity’s outfit is one thing. Saying it about a classmate is bullying.

Examples

  • “That haircut is chopped, bro. What happened?”
  • “No sleep, no skincare, I’m chopped.”
  • “The new logo is kind of chopped, not gonna lie.”

Where it came from

Merriam-Webster says it’s believed to come from African American English and has been around for decades, with some commentators placing it in the New York and New Jersey area. Know Your Meme’s earliest example is an Urban Dictionary entry from 2014, and a viral 2020 tweet called the Mona Lisa chopped.

It exploded in late 2024 and early 2025, partly through a meme mocking a teenager’s face that drew criticism for targeting a real kid. Spin-offs followed, and Merriam-Webster cites a 2025 New York Times article about a TikTok on the so-called “chopped man epidemic.”

Don’t confuse it with

  • Chopped as a caption on a fresh haircut photo, which just means “got a cut.”
  • Chopped it up, which means had a conversation.

Chopped vs. mid

Mid means average and unremarkable. Chopped is worse: actively unattractive. The opposite of chopped is a glow-up.
