W

/ˈdʌbəljuː/ Beginner Updated

W means “win.” Calling something a W says it’s a victory, a good decision, or simply great news. Its opposite is L, a loss.

What does W mean?

W is shorthand for a win, borrowed from sports records, where W stands for wins. In everyday slang it can describe almost anything positive: getting a day off, a friend’s good advice, a restaurant that exceeded expectations, or someone handling a situation well.

It’s often used as a one-word reply (“W”) or in phrases like “massive W,” “W friend,” or “W rizz,” meaning good flirting.

How to use W

  • “Class got cancelled. Huge W.”
  • “Free refills here? W.”
  • “Your mom packing you lunch is a W.”
  • “W take, I agree completely.”

W vs. L

The two are usually used as a pair. Something good is a W; something bad is an L. In comment sections you’ll often see people sorting everything into the two: “W song, L video.”

Where W comes from

W and L come from sports win-loss records. According to Know Your Meme, “take the L” was defined on Urban Dictionary in 2003 and spread widely in the mid-2010s, with “W” catching on later as its positive opposite. Today both are everyday internet shorthand.
