main character syndrome
Main character syndrome is acting as if your life is a movie and everyone else is just a supporting role in it. It’s a slang criticism of self-centred behaviour, not a medical diagnosis.
What does main character syndrome mean?
Someone with main character syndrome treats ordinary situations as scenes about them. They might film strangers for content without asking, make a group event about their own drama, or expect everyone to notice their mood. The idea is that they’ve forgotten other people are the main characters of their own lives.
It’s a casual, often joking label. Psychologists don’t recognize it as a condition, so it shouldn’t be confused with real personality disorders.
How to use main character syndrome

Main character syndrome vs. main character energy
They sound similar but point in opposite directions. Main character energy is usually a compliment: confidence and enjoying your own life. Main character syndrome is a complaint: ignoring or using the people around you.
Where main character syndrome comes from
According to Merriam-Webster, the phrase began in the early 2010s as a put-down in role-playing games, for players who took a leading role at the expense of others. It spread to everyday use as “main character” slang took off on Twitter and TikTok around 2019–2020.
