photo dump

A photo dump is a batch of loosely related photos posted together, usually as an Instagram carousel, with a casual caption and very little editing.

What a photo dump looks like

Picture the last month of your camera roll: a blurry concert shot, a coffee, your friend mid-laugh, a sunset from the bus, a screenshot of a funny text. A photo dump throws a handful of those into one post. The order feels random, the captions are minimal (“september dump,” “recently”), and the whole thing is meant to look effortless.

That effortlessness is often carefully staged. Plenty of photo dumps are curated as hard as any polished post. They just aim for a different look: real life, not a photoshoot.

Examples

• “Posting a summer photo dump before it’s officially fall.”
• “Her photo dump is 9 pictures of food and one of her boyfriend’s elbow.”
• “Is it a photo dump if I spent an hour choosing the order?”

Where it came from

Nobody is credited with the phrase, and dictionaries haven’t added it yet. The format became possible when Instagram launched carousels in early 2017, letting people post up to 10 images at once. According to The Conversation, photo dumps started filling feeds in late 2020, and the tech outlet Input linked the trend to the pandemic, when there were fewer big events to dress up for and camera rolls filled with everyday moments.

By 2021, Instagram said people in the US had used “photo dump” or #photodump more than 700,000 times in a single month. In August 2024 it doubled the carousel limit to 20 photos, with the change pitched as a nod to the trend.

Why people like them

A photo dump feels like a diary rather than an advertisement. It’s a reaction against the heavily filtered, one-perfect-shot feed of the 2010s, and it lets you share a lot of small moments without making a big deal of any one of them.
