LFG

/el-ef-jee/ Intermediate Updated

LFG usually means “let’s f—ing go,” a hype cheer for a big win, good news or anything you’re excited about. In gaming, it can also mean “looking for group.”

LFG as a hype word

This is the meaning you’ll see most on social media. Your team scores in the last minute, your friend gets the job, the concert tickets go through: LFG. It’s celebration in three letters, usually in caps and often with a few 🔥 or 🚀 emojis.

The full phrase includes a swear word, which is part of the energy. People who want to keep it clean say it stands for “let’s freaking go,” and many just think of it as “let’s go” turned up to eleven.

Examples

  • “WE’RE IN THE FINAL. LFG!!!”
  • “First paycheck from the new job, lfg.”
  • “Flights booked. Lisbon in two weeks. LFG.”

LFG in sports and crypto

Athletes and fans use it constantly. In 2021 it became the title of an HBO Max documentary, LFG, about US women’s national soccer team players suing U.S. Soccer over unequal pay; the title came from the team’s rallying cry. NPR described it as “let’s go” with an expletive in the middle.

It also became a fixture of crypto and NFT talk around the 2021 boom, posted whenever prices climbed. Crypto glossaries list it as one of the community’s standard hype phrases.

LFG as “looking for group”

In online multiplayer games, especially MMOs like World of Warcraft, LFG means you’re looking for other players to team up with for a dungeon or raid. World of Warcraft even has a LookingForGroup chat channel. A post like “LFG for tonight’s raid, healer” has nothing to do with celebrating.

How to tell which one is meant

Look at the context. Caps, exclamation marks and good news mean hype. A game name, a role like tank or healer, or a time means someone wants teammates.
