huzz

/HUZ/ Beginner Updated

Huzz is online slang for girls or women, usually said as “the huzz.” It’s a reworked version of “hoes,” so even when it’s used jokingly, it has a crude edge.

What huzz means

Merriam-Webster defines huzz as online slang for women and says it stands for “hos/hoes,” used as a slangy, cheeky way of referring to women in general. Dictionary.com adds that it can also mean a romantic partner, a bit like “boo.” You’ll usually see it in phrases like “doing it for the huzz,” meaning doing something to impress girls.

It belongs to a family of rhyming “-uzz” words: bruzz (bros), chuzz and gruzz (grandparents or older people), each standing for a different group.

Examples

  • “He only started going to the gym for the huzz.”
  • “Bro wore cologne to math class. The huzz must be coming.”
  • “Gaining aura for the huzz.”

Where huzz came from

Both dictionaries credit the streamer Kai Cenat with popularizing it. Dictionary.com says that in February 2023 Cenat livestreamed himself teaching an older man to dance, explaining it was “for the huzz,” and the word took off on TikTok from there. Merriam-Webster describes it as having spread like wildfire after a 2023 video.

A note for parents and teachers

Most kids using “huzz” are being silly rather than deliberately vulgar, and many may not connect it to the word it comes from. But that’s where it comes from, and it treats girls as a group to be impressed or collected. It’s reasonable to tell kids it doesn’t belong in class, and to explain why.
