aura farming

/OR-uh FAR-ming/ Beginner Updated

Aura farming means doing something to look effortlessly cool, ideally without looking like you’re trying. To “farm aura” is to stack up coolness points.

What aura farming means

Merriam-Webster defines it as doing something to look cool, impressive or stylish, especially, and importantly, without trying too hard. Dictionary.com describes it as cultivating your image or vibe, often for online attention. Think of a slow-motion walk-in, a no-look trick shot, a perfectly timed sip of coffee, or a calm face in a chaotic moment.

It can be praise (“he’s aura farming and it’s working”) or mockery (“you’re so obviously aura farming”). The second one stings, because the whole point is supposed to be effortless.

Examples

  • “He put on sunglasses indoors to read one text. Pure aura farming.”
  • “Aura farming 101: bring a book and sit by the window.”
  • “She hit the shot and didn’t even watch it go in. Aura farmed.”

Where it came from

It joins slang aura, meaning someone’s cool factor, with “farming,” the gaming habit of repeating actions to rack up points or items. Know Your Meme finds an early use in a January 2024 TikTok captioned “Aura Farming,” and says the phrase spread through anime fandom, where fans used it for characters striking dramatic poses. Merriam-Webster also credits anime fandom with its surge.

Dictionary.com says it became widely known in mid-2025 thanks to a viral video of a young boy in Indonesia dancing calmly on the front of a racing boat, which celebrities and athletes then copied.
