glazing

/GLAY-zing/ Beginner Updated

Glazing means praising someone way too much, to the point where it sounds fake, over the top or embarrassing. The verb is “glaze” (“stop glazing him”), and someone who does it is a “glazer.”

What it means

If your friend can’t stop talking about how their favorite player is the greatest of all time, you might tell them to stop glazing. The word suggests the praise is either insincere, like sucking up to a boss, or just more than the person deserves.

It has softened a bit with use. People “self-glaze” when they hype themselves up, and some use it jokingly for any compliment: “thanks for the glaze.”

Examples

  • “He scored one goal and you’re calling him the GOAT? Stop glazing.”
  • “Every comment under her post is people glazing.”
  • “Not to glaze myself, but this cake is perfect.”

Where it came from

Merriam-Webster says it started showing up on social media in the early 2020s and treats it as a figurative use of glaze, the shiny coating on a donut: you’re covering someone in sweetness. Know Your Meme traced it to a Discord server in November 2021 and a tweet from the same month. Twitch streamers including Kai Cenat and Duke Dennis spread it from 2022, and Cenat reportedly told photographers at the Grammys to “glaze” him.

Is glazing a rude word?

Mostly no. Know Your Meme links it to a crude sexual slang image, but Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com describe it simply as a figurative use of glaze, and most people using it, kids included, just mean “stop sucking up.” Fine with friends. Maybe not in a performance review.

Glazing vs. simping

A simp goes overboard for someone they’re attracted to. Glazing is overboard praise for anyone: an athlete, a celebrity, a teacher, a video game.
