anti-fan
An anti-fan is someone who actively campaigns against a celebrity or group, not just someone who doesn’t like them. Anti-fans put time into it: hostile comments, rumor threads, coordinated reports, sometimes outright harassment. The term is most closely tied to K-pop.
What does anti-fan mean?
Not liking a singer’s music doesn’t make you an anti-fan. What sets an anti-fan apart is effort. They follow the person closely, often more closely than casual fans do, so they can criticize, mock or try to damage their reputation. In fandom spaces, people often shorten it to “anti” or “antis.”
In Korea the word is 안티팬 (antipaen), built from the English words “anti” and “fan.” It is familiar enough there that a Korean novel, a film and a TV drama have all used the title So I Married an Anti-fan. Organized anti-fan groups, sometimes called “anti-cafés” after the online café communities where they gather, have been a known problem in the K-pop industry for years.
How people use it
- “Half the comments under that post are anti-fans with brand-new accounts.”
- “Don’t argue with the anti-fans, just report and move on.”
- “I’m not an anti-fan, I just think the new single is boring.”
- “Her anti-fans made a whole thread twisting one clip from a variety show.”
Anti-fan vs. hater vs. critic
A critic gives an opinion about the work. A hater is negative, usually casually. An anti-fan is organized and persistent, and the target is the person, not just the music. That is why fans treat anti-fans as a real threat rather than a difference of taste.
