six seven (67)

/siks SEV-un/ Beginner Updated

“Six seven” (also written 67 or 6 7) is a Gen Alpha catchphrase that doesn’t really mean anything. Kids shout it whenever the numbers six and seven come up, often with a palms-up, see-saw hand motion, and the nonsense is the joke.

What does 67 mean?

Honestly, not much. Merriam-Webster calls six seven a nonsensical expression used especially by teens and tweens. Some people say it means “so-so,” because of the up-and-down hand gesture that goes with it. Dictionary.com defines it as an interjection used to signal swagger or insider status. Both agree on the main point: if you’re asking what it means, you’re probably not supposed to get it.

In practice, a teacher says “turn to page 67” and the whole class yells “SIX SEVEN.” A score ends 6–7. A clock reads 6:07. Same reaction.

Examples

  • “How tall is he?” “Six seven.” “SIX SEVENNN.”
  • “The answer is 67.” *entire class loses it*
  • “My son says ‘67’ at least forty times a day and I still don’t know why.”

Where six seven came from

Both Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com trace it to the drill song “Doot Doot (6 7)” by the rapper Skrilla, which repeats “six-seven” as a hook. The sound spread on TikTok and Instagram in videos about basketball, especially clips of NBA player LaMelo Ball, who is 6’7”. Dictionary.com says clips pairing the song with basketball footage go back to October 2024, and that a viral video of a boy shouting “67” at a youth basketball game helped push it everywhere.

Word of the Year

Dictionary.com named 67 its 2025 Word of the Year, announcing it on October 28, 2025. Merriam-Webster’s own 2025 Word of the Year was “slop,” but its announcement singled out six seven as the hit Gen Alpha slang term of the year.

A note for parents and teachers

It’s harmless. There’s no hidden rude meaning. Like skibidi, part of the fun for kids is that adults find it baffling, so asking them to explain it usually makes it funnier.
