aza
Aza is Nigerian slang for a bank account number. “Send your aza” means “send me your account details so I can transfer money.”
What aza means
When a Nigerian asks for your aza, they want your account number, usually because money is coming your way: a refund, your share of a bill, a birthday gift. You’ll see it under social media posts too, when someone offers to send money or asks for support: “drop your aza.”
Examples
- “Send your aza, I’ll refund you now.”
- “Drop your aza, let me send your share.”
- “She asked for my aza to process the refund.”
Where it came from
According to Wikipedia, aza comes from the Edo language of southern Nigeria, where it can mean a store room, a treasury, a savings box or a bank. From there it spread across Nigeria as a casual word for account details.
