OOTD

OOTD stands for “outfit of the day,” a photo or video showing what someone is wearing today. It’s usually posted as a caption or hashtag, often with a list of where each piece came from.

What OOTD means

An OOTD post is a simple brag, or a simple record. Mirror selfie, full-length shot against a wall, or a quick spin on TikTok: here’s the outfit, maybe tagged with the brands. Dictionary.com notes these posts often credit each item, which is part of why brands love them.

It isn’t only for fashion people. A great thrifted find, a wedding guest look or a first-day-of-school outfit all make good OOTDs.

Where OOTD came from

Dictionary.com says the #ootd hashtag first appeared on Twitter in 2009, took off on Instagram in 2011 and was especially popular in 2012, when fashion bloggers used it to find and share each other’s looks. Wikipedia notes OOTD videos date back to around 2010. By 2016, according to Wikipedia, #OOTD was on more than 80 million Instagram posts.

• OOTW: outfits of the week.
• MUOTD: makeup of the day.
• NOTD: nails of the day.
• Fit check: a casual way of showing off what you’re wearing, common on TikTok.

The downside

Some fashion writers argue that daily outfit posts push people to keep buying new clothes so they never repeat a look, and some stylists say chasing what looks good in an OOTD can crowd out personal style.
