blokecore

/BLOHK-kor/ Beginner Updated

Blokecore is the fashion trend of dressing like a British football fan on a weekend: a retro football shirt, loose jeans and Adidas Sambas. It’s deliberately low effort, and that’s the appeal.

What blokecore means

Know Your Meme describes blokecore, also called ladcore, as a 2022 trend of wearing football jerseys with jeans and soccer shoes, modeled on the look of English, British and Australian “blokes.” Wiktionary’s definition adds track tops, old padded or leather jackets and cheap trainers. The shirt is the centerpiece, ideally a vintage kit from an obscure club or a 1990s season.

You don’t have to follow football to wear it, or even support the club on your shirt. The borrowed, slightly ironic look is part of the joke.

Examples

  • “Retro Arsenal shirt, baggy jeans, Sambas. Textbook blokecore.”
  • “I don’t even watch football, I just like the blokecore look.”
  • “My dad’s been doing blokecore since 1996. He just called it Saturday.”

Where it came from

It’s bloke, the British word for a man, plus the -core ending used for aesthetics. Know Your Meme traces the name to a TikTok posted on December 23, 2021, in which a user declared “bloke core” the hottest trend of 2022 while wearing jeans, a football jersey and white Adidas Sambas. It took off in spring 2022, and by May 2022 British newspapers like The Telegraph were writing about it.
