chido
Chido is Mexican slang for “cool” or “awesome.” “¡Qué chido!” means “How cool!”
What chido means
Wiktionary labels it colloquial Mexican slang for cool or awesome. It works for almost anything you like: a place, a plan, a song, a jacket, a person. “Está bien chido” means it’s really cool. Spanish speakers elsewhere tend to recognize it as a Mexican word; in Spain the everyday equivalent is guay.
Examples
- “¡Qué chido!” (How cool!)
- “Your new jacket is chido.”
- “Está bien chido el concierto.” (The concert is really good.)
Where it came from
Nobody is sure. Wiktionary gives two possibilities: the Asturian word xidu, meaning nice or beautiful, brought to Mexico by Asturian immigrants in the 19th century, or an older slang word, chiro, meaning excellent.
