lodi

/LOH-dee/ Beginner Updated

Lodi is Filipino slang for “idol,” spelled backwards. People call someone lodi when they admire them, and friends use it like “buddy.”

What lodi means

Wiktionary gives two senses: a person you look up to or respect, and a friendly way of addressing a peer, like buddy or mate. So you might comment “lodi!” under a friend’s great photo, or greet a classmate with “uy, lodi.” There’s even a cute version, lodicakes.

Examples

  • “You passed the bar exam? Lodi!”
  • “Lodi, can I borrow your notes?”
  • “She’s my lodi when it comes to cooking.”

Where it came from

Lodi is Tagalog back slang, made by flipping the English word “idol.” Wiktionary dates it to 2018. Back slang is a big part of Filipino slang: petmalu and astig were made the same way.
