yami kawaii

/YAH-mee kah-WAH-ee/ Beginner Updated

Yami kawaii, Japanese for roughly “sick cute,” is a fashion style that pairs soft pastel cuteness with images of illness and sadness: pills, syringes, bandages and dark slogans. It started in Tokyo’s Harajuku district in the 2010s.

What it looks like

At first glance it’s classic kawaii: pastel pinks and lavenders, frills, bows and cute characters. Look closer and the details turn dark: medical prints, bandages, pill-shaped accessories and phrases about being sad or tired of life. Business of Fashion described the idea as dressing as if ill, fragile or wounded.

Why people wear it

It’s closely tied to mental health. Business of Fashion described the style as bringing Japan’s mental-health issues to the surface. For some wearers it’s a way of making their feelings visible; others say it’s purely an aesthetic and not a statement about themselves. Refinery29 framed the open question: does it glamorize mental illness, or help people talk about it? People who follow the style land on both sides.

If the themes hit close to home for you, talking to someone you trust, or to a local helpline, can help.

Where it came from

The style grew out of Harajuku street fashion in the 2010s. A key figure is illustrator Bisuko Ezaki, whose character Menhera-chan, created in 2013, became closely associated with it. Earlier “creepy-cute” art helped pave the way; Business of Fashion calls artist Mori Chack, whose Gloomy Bear launched in 2000, one of the forerunners of the related guro-kawaii style.

Yami kawaii vs. menhera vs. pastel goth

  • Menhera: Japanese internet slang about mental illness and the people and communities around it. It overlaps with yami kawaii but isn’t the same thing.
  • Yami kawaii: the fashion style that draws on those themes.
  • Pastel goth: a Western Tumblr style mixing goth and pastels, without the mental-health focus.
