unc

/UNK/ Beginner Updated

Unc is short for “uncle.” Online, calling someone unc, or saying they’ve hit “unc status,” means they’re old, or acting old, in a corny, out-of-touch way. In its original use it’s a warm term of respect.

What unc means

There are two layers. In African American English, unc has long been an affectionate or respectful name for an uncle or an older man in the community, Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com both note. In internet slang, it became a playful insult: you’re unc if you groan when you stand up, use outdated tech, or keep telling people how things were in your day. “Unc status” is the moment you realize you’re no longer young.

Gen Z and Gen Alpha use it to roast teachers, parents and older siblings. Millennials use it on themselves.

Examples

  • “You still use Facebook? Okay, unc.”
  • “I went to bed at 9:30 on a Saturday. Unc status unlocked.”
  • “Shoutout to unc for teaching me how to fix a tire.”

Where unc came from

It’s been common in Black communities for a long time. Merriam-Webster points to an early rap example in Defari’s 2003 song “For the Love,” and says Gucci Mane and J. Cole helped spread it in the 2010s. The “unc status” joke took off around June 2021, according to Merriam-Webster, after a TikTok video in which a man is greeted with “Wassup unc” and realizes, with visible dismay, that he’s officially reached unc status.

Is unc an insult?

It depends. Aimed at your actual uncle or an older man you look up to, it’s affectionate. Aimed at a 25-year-old who doesn’t know a new song, it’s teasing. It’s rarely mean-spirited.
