clanker

/KLANG-ker/ Beginner Updated

Clanker is a mocking slang word for robots and AI: chatbots, delivery robots, AI-generated content and anything else that’s a machine pretending to be a person. It’s meant as an insult, usually a jokey one.

What clanker means

Merriam-Webster defines clanker as a derogatory term for robots and AI technology. Dictionary.com lists it as slang for a robot, chatbot or AI app, often derogatory, and adds a couple of older senses: a piece of worn-out technology, a lie, or a flop. In 2025 people used it for everything from customer-service bots to AI art to the little robots that deliver takeout.

Examples

  • “I had to argue with a clanker for ten minutes before it let me talk to a human.”
  • “This essay was written by a clanker and it shows.”
  • “A delivery clanker just blocked the whole sidewalk.”

Where clanker came from

It’s named for the clanking sound metal machines make. Merriam-Webster notes the Historical Dictionary of Science Fiction records “clanker” meaning robot in science fiction since 1958. Star Wars fans know it best: clone troopers call battle droids clankers in the 2005 video game Republic Commando and the 2008 animated series The Clone Wars. Merriam-Webster says its 2025 boom may have been helped along by players of the 2024 game Helldivers 2, who used it for the game’s robot enemies, and Know Your Meme says it went viral on TikTok in July 2025.

Is clanker a slur?

People jokingly call it a “slur” for robots, and that framing gets pushback from both sides. Dictionary.com notes some see the jokes as mirroring real-world bigotry, while others say treating it as a slur “humanizes” machines that aren’t human. Mostly, though, it’s an outlet for frustration with AI showing up everywhere.
