airhead

An airhead is a scatterbrained, silly person, someone who seems to have nothing but air between their ears. It’s a mild, teasing insult, closer to “ditzy” than to “stupid.”

What airhead means

Calling someone an airhead says they’re forgetful or not paying attention, not that they’re dim in any deep way. The classic airhead move is hunting all over the house for your phone while you’re talking on it.

The word has some baggage. It was often aimed at women and tied to the ditzy-blonde stereotype, which is why it can sting more than it sounds. These days people use it about anyone, and very often about themselves: “Sorry, total airhead moment.”

• “She’s not an airhead. She just doesn’t care about your fantasy league.”

Where it came from

It’s simply air plus head. Dictionary.com dates the slang sense to around the late 1970s, possibly a bit earlier, and the adjective “airheaded” came along with it.

There’s an unrelated military “airhead”: an area in hostile territory that airborne troops seize so supplies can be flown in, built on the model of “beachhead.” Same spelling, completely different word.
