IJGB

/eye-jay-gee-BEE/ Beginner Updated

IJGB stands for “I just got back.” Nigerians use it, often teasingly, for someone from the diaspora who has just come home after years abroad and can’t stop mentioning it.

What IJGB means

Wikipedia describes an IJGB as a member of the Nigerian diaspora who has returned after an extended time away. The name comes from a line returnees supposedly say all the time, “I just got back,” which gives away how out of touch they are with life at home. It’s often a little mocking, aimed at the accent, the attitude and the money people assume IJGBs have.

You’ll hear the word most around Christmas, when many Nigerians abroad fly home for Detty December.

Examples

  • “He’s been back two weeks and still complains about the heat. Typical IJGB.”
  • “The IJGBs have taken over every beach party this December.”
  • “Don’t give me that IJGB accent, you left in 2019.”
