munted

/MUN-tid/ Beginner Updated

In New Zealand and Australian slang, munted means broken, wrecked or ruined: a munted phone, a munted car, a munted knee. It can also mean very drunk or high.

What munted means

Anything badly damaged or no longer working can be munted. Drop your phone off a ladder and the screen’s munted. A road torn up by an earthquake is munted. Wikipedia’s list of New Zealand English words defines it simply as broken, ruined or wrecked.

It can describe people too, usually meaning very drunk or out of it, and in British slang it can mean drunk or stupid. Like a lot of slang, it’s blunt and informal, so keep it for friends rather than formal emails.

Examples

  • “My phone’s munted, the screen won’t even turn on.”
  • “The car’s gearbox is completely munted.”
  • “He was absolutely munted by the end of the night.”

Where it came from

Collins dates munted to the 20th century and says its origin is unknown. Wiktionary records it in British, Australian and New Zealand slang, with the “broken” sense especially at home in New Zealand.
