chat is this real

/CHAT iz this REEL/ Beginner Updated

“Chat, is this real?” is a joking way of asking “can you believe this?” It’s usually said about something that is obviously fake, or so wild it might as well be.

What it means

“Chat” is what livestreamers call their viewers, because the viewers talk to them through the live chat. Know Your Meme describes “chat is this real” as a streamer asking their audience whether something they’re reacting to is real, and it’s mostly used ironically: on a clearly photoshopped picture, an AI voice, or a fake screenshot.

Kids now say “chat” in real life too, talking to an imaginary audience (“chat, I’m cooked”). Merriam-Webster lists “chat” as slang for a friendly way to address your presumed audience of friends and followers.

Examples

  • “My little brother cleaned his room without being asked. Chat, is this real?”
  • “A ‘leaked’ photo of a new console that looks like a toaster. Chat is this real?”
  • “Chat, my teacher just cancelled the test.”

Where it came from

Know Your Meme credits YouTube streamer iShowSpeed with popularizing it around March 2023. He often asked his chat “is this real?” about content that was obviously fake. In one widely shared stream from March 20, 2023, he reacts to an AI-generated Elon Musk voice offering him a Tesla. Clips spread on TikTok, and by May 2023 “chat is this real” was everywhere as a comment and caption.
