About
SlangDecoded explains English slang in plain language: what a word means, how people actually use it, and where it came from. It is for anyone who has run into a word they didn’t recognize, whether that’s a parent reading a group chat, an English learner watching TikTok, or someone who just wants to know what everyone is talking about.
What every entry includes
- A one-sentence answer at the top, for when you just need the meaning.
- A fuller explanation, including tone: whether a word is friendly, sarcastic, rude or offensive.
- Examples written the way people really talk.
- Where the word comes from, as far as it can be traced.
- Links to related terms, so you can follow the thread.
How entries are researched
Each term is checked against reliable references, such as major dictionaries, reporting on internet culture, and the communities where the word is actually used. We look at how a word is used today, not just how it started.
Slang history is messy, and many words have no clear first use. When an origin is uncertain, we say so instead of inventing a date or a neat story. When a word is offensive, or can be in some contexts, we say that too.
Our standards
- No made-up words presented as real slang.
- No copied definitions from other sites.
- No guessing dressed up as fact.
We are reworking older entries to this standard, starting with the terms people search for most.
